Are you over or under-tightening?

There’s nothing worse than needing to adjust something on your bike, but you can’t get it loose, or the bolt is stripped. When tightening, loosening, or adjusting any bolts on your bike, make sure to have the right tools for the job.

Especially if you’re trying to adjust something at home, make sure you have the exact tool you need to adjust the item. Investing in a good set of Allen keys that are right for your bike will save you time and money. Remember to check if you need the star or the usual type before purchasing.

Adjusting bolts is one thing, but what about tightening? Over-tightening and you’ll risk bolts getting permanently stuck, or even worse, cracking your carbon frame or component. Too loose and you’ll risk something slipping or failing while you’re out riding. This could cause serious injury. If you’re unsure about the tightness of bolts, please bring your bike into the store so that we can properly adjust it for you with a torque wrench.

Here’s how else you can protect the nuts and bolts on your bike:
1. Invest in a good set of Allen keys and a torque wrench.
2. Consult us in-store if you need something tightened or changed.

3. Remember to grease, thread lock, and/or anti-seize bolts before re-tightening.
4. Check the recommended torque on product descriptions and do not go beyond this.
5. Particularly for pedals, do not overtighten as they’ll tighten as you ride – also remember to regrease, and clean regularly.

Don’t crack under pressure
