Understanding your starting point is crucial to improve your fitness and strength. A benchmark FTP (Functional Threshold Power) test is essential to gauge your capabilities accurately for improvement.
A FTP test determines how much power you can sustain over a given distance and determines the power zones needed for interval training. You can estimate your FTP by taking your best 20-minute power effort and multiplying it by 95%. Doing an FTP test on your indoor trainer is the most accurate way to gauge your FTP and power zones.
Don’t have an indoor trainer,
1. 20 mins: Warm up at an easy, talkable pace with a comfortable cadence.
2. 20-minute all-out effort (that you must sustain for 20 minutes).
3. 20 mins: Cool down
* If you have an indoor trainer, download Zwift or another training program to facilitate your FTP test.
Knowing where you’re at will help you know where to start, how to train, and ultimately, how to improve your power output. An indoor trainer is the perfect tool.
