Skipping breakfast (especially before a ride) will help you lose weight...
Your body needs fuel when you exercise. Skipping meals throws your calorie balance and then your body panic stores any and all foods as fat. When you eat balanced meals your body is taught to use food as energy and not to store it as fat.
There are three types of calories. Proteins, carbohydrates and fats, known as macronutrients. They all have different roles but are all needed to fuel your body – especially when you exercise. This is why calorie counting can be dangerous. You need to eat balanced meals that include protein, carbs and fats. When your calorie balance is right you boost your immune system, build muscle and boost your energy - which are all needed to ride your bike. Not only is fuel important before you ride, fueling your body while you ride is just as important.
Bananas are a great food source for cycling. They are great for replacing the electrolytes you lose through sweat, particularly potassium (which you’ll need to avoid cramps) as well as providing 25g-30g of carbohydrates for energy per banana. Other great breakfast ideas that you can have on or off the bike include:
- Boiled eggs
- Oats
- Health muffins
- Natural energy bars
Make sure you’re getting in enough calories to fuel your ride. Skipping meals doesn’t help you lose weight, in fact, it can send your body into panic mode and teach your body to store food as fat. We’ll help you with fuel advice both on and off the bike.
