Chain clean, check & change

Your chain is one of the most important components on your bike. Without it, your wheels won’t turn when you pedal. When your chain isn’t cleaned and lubed, it’ll increase chain wear, as well as wear down your more expensive components like your cassette. Even worse, a dirty worn-out chain will cause you to lose watts!

To keep your chain running smoothly and effectively, invest in a good degreaser, cleaner, brush, and lube, and make sure to properly clean it after every ride.

Chain length is another critically important aspect, often overlooked by riders.

Here are the most common mistakes:

1. Too short: You won’t be able to access your easiest gears (largest cog). If you try to force it, you’ll put unnecessary tension on the system, increasing the chance of it snapping or breaking, which could also rip your derailleur off in the process.
2. Too long: Your chain will sag and slap against your frame when you’re in your smallest cog (heaviest gear). This could cause frame damage and make shifting difficult.

If you’re unsure about your chain length or wear, you can bring your bike into the shop and we’ll check it for you for free.

Tips and tricks to prolong your chain:
1. Rotate 2 or 3 chains every 1000 – 1500km.
2. Ensure you’re carrying the right magic link for your chain type.

3. Always carry a multi-tool with a chain break.
4. Make sure your chain is installed correctly (can be directional).
5. Invest in a few different lubes for different conditions (dry, wet, mud).

Only as strong as your weakest link
