One of the most underrated ways of increasing your power output is by perfecting your pedalling style. Are you pedalling perfect circles? Or are you losing power with every stroke?
The perfect pedal stroke needs your power distribution to be smooth and even throughout all four phases of a rotation. This allows you to generate maximum power output while minimising muscle fatigue. Focus on pushing down through phases one and two as much as you focus on “pulling up” through phases 3 & 4. Focus on pedalling smooth circles rather than up and down – or even worse, just down. With a bike fit, we can analyze your pedalling style and improve your power output.
Power meters track how evenly your legs are spreading the load with every rotation. In a perfect world, your one leg should be doing 50% of the work, and 50% on the other leg. However, a 48% – 52% split is still acceptable. When the gap gets bigger (one leg doing more than the other), you can lose up to 15% of power output.
