Just keep pedalling
Position, position, position

Getting your cleat, shoe and pedal position right won’t only help you feel more comfortable when you ride, but it’ll also improve your pedalling efficiency and help you avoid niggles and injuries. Have your shoes and pedals been set up by an expert?

It’s important to have your cleats set up correctly on your shoes every time you get a new pair, or new cleats. Remember, cycling involves a lot of movement so checking your cleats every few months to make sure they haven’t moved can also help your riding. Here are some things to remember:
- Cleats too far forward will reduce power output, put pressure on your muscles and increase cramps.
- Cleats too far back will reduce pedalling efficiency and strain your hamstrings and can cause injury to your back.

If you buy new shoes or pedals with us, we’ll set it up for you for free. If you’d like to tackle this on your own, here's a great video that’ll explain how to set up cleats with your new shoes.

Pedal float is the amount of angular movement that is allowed to your foot on your pedal. Some pedals are very fixed – allowing no movement, while others allow for customisable ranges of float. The more float, the easier it is to cleat and un-cleat.
