Skill up with the right pedals

Although you might think it’s all about the bike, pedals can affect your riding ability and skills. It might seem daunting to make the change from platform (flat) pedals to cleated pedals, but it’ll significantly improve your control and skills.

Here are 5 tips to remember when making the switch:
1. Find a safe place to practise cleating in and un-cleating (lean against a wall for example to practise the twist).
2. Certain cleats allow you to loosen the tension (making it easier to un-cleat) – We’ll do this for you.
3. Make sure your cleats are centered on your shoe so that you have enough space to un-cleat and move away from your crank – We can position your cleats.
4. Get the shoes that suit the pedals (stiffness and compatibility) – We’ll help with this.
5. As you progress, use your weight to move your bike through the pedals (not just lifting your feet when you bunny hop) – Skills sessions can help here.

Remember to practise new skills with flat pedals and once you know what needs to be done, practise and execute with your cleated pedals.

Make it even easier for yourself by investing in multi-release cleats. These cleats release more easily than the normal lateral releasing cleats and gives you more angles to work with. This allows your heel the freedom to move side to side, as well as upwards – making it easier to un-cleat.
