One of the most forgotten-about checks on your bike is your spokes. Your spokes provide support to your wheels and rims but also balance to ensure you roll smoothly with no bumps or dead spots. So, what happens when you break a spoke?
When a spoke breaks, it negatively impacts the tension and balance of your wheel. Breaking only one spoke might not cause a wheel collapse, but it does compromise the strength of a wheel, and therefore, your safety.
- Avoid landing hard on your wheel.
- Check your spokes are intact before every ride.
- Have your spoke tension checked at every service.
- If one spoke breaks, its worth having your wheel rebuilt.
If you want to learn how to get home when you break a spoke watch this video from GCN or pop into the store and we can show you how to get home safely.
Spokes can also break due to wear and tear or rust of your nipples. Keep your wheels clean to reduce your chances of breaking a spoke. If you do break a spoke, make sure to tie it to the closest spoke so it doesn’t wave around. You can do this by carrying some tape or small cable ties (that you can store in your handlebar).
Make sure your wheels are well looked after and clean to avoid unnecessarily breaking a spoke. We’ll check your wheels and spokes to make sure your wheels are solid every time you bring your bike in for a service. Send us a message if you would to book a bike service.
