Splendid suspension
The right suspension for you

Rear suspension is mostly found on full-suspension mountain bikes, and some gravel bikes. Its main job is to absorb shock, allow your rear wheel to stay on the ground for greater traction, and allow you to be more comfortable, tackle bigger obstacles and reduce fatigue.

Having a bike with any form of suspension needs to be maintained and looked after. You should be servicing your suspension professionally after every 100 – 150 hours of riding time.

Here are the issues to look out for:

- Excessive oil leakage
- Suspension not holding air
- Knocking sounds or play
- If your suspension completely deflates or bottoms out

Sag refers to how much your rear suspension compresses with your weight (just sitting) on your bike. Here’s how much sag your rear suspension should have:
- XCO bike – 15% to 25% of the suspension's pressure
- Enduro bike – 20 to 30% of the suspension's pressure
- Downhill bike – 25% to 30% of the suspension's pressure
