The right trainer for you

Indoor trainers are the best tool for training from your own home. But with so many product offerings and types, how do you know where to start?

There are four main types of trainers:

1. Direct-drive trainers, you remove your rear wheel, and they require a cassette. They’re usually more expensive, but very accurate.

2. Friction trainers, you don’t remove your rear wheel and they use magnetic or fluid resistance. They’re a little cheaper but also a littler noisier.

3. Roller trainers require the most skill as your bike isn’t attached. They improve your pedaling efficiency and technique.

4. Trainer bikes are the most expensive as they are a complete bike. They are very accurate and can be completely adjusted for your perfect fit.

Here’s what you should consider besides budget and brand:

- Compatibility; does your bike have the right attachments (like thru axel or direct mount) or you might need to purchase one separately. - Noise; if you’ll be training in the house, you might want a quiet trainer.
- Stability; although its not common to fall off a trainer, it’s not hard if you’re going flat out. You might want a trainer with a wide base and not rollers for example.
