Gear ratios can be confusing to understand; even more challenging, what do you pick for your bike? Usually on a road bike, you’ll have two chain-rings, a bigger outer ring and a smaller inner ring. 53T outer and 39T inner is considered standard sizing for a chain-set. A triple chain-set (3 chain rings up front) is considered to now be “older” technology. Some teams at this year’s Tour de France are running one chain-ring.
If you’re doing a lot of hills and climbing in your training and riding, you might consider a smaller combination to give you more easy gears to help you with the steeper gradients.
Older bikes have 8 / 9 / 10 speeds on the rear cassette while newer bikes have 11 / 12 speeds. On newer bikes, gear ratios are coming out standard with smaller combinations to give riders more and easier gears. SRAM for example would suggest 53 / 39T chain-sets, and they’re now encouraging brands to make 50 / 37T chain-sets the new standard.
Keeping your drivetrain lubricated is imperative for smooth shifting. We recommend:
