Going fast and getting aero is easier than it seems with the right technology. One of the most underrated aero pieces of equipment, are your wheels.
Although they have differing properties, understanding a few basic terms will help you understand and pick the right wheels for you:
- Spokes are the aluminium or carbon “sticks” that join your hub (centre of your wheel) to the outermost part of your wheel.
- Rim depth is the height of the outermost part of your wheel and can range from 10mm to 100mm. The deeper your rim, the more aero, but be aware the wind can be your enemy with deep section wheels.
- A disc wheel is a rear wheel mostly used on TT bikes and is completely solid (from hub to rim), mostly made of carbon.
Aero wheels smooth the airflow as you pedal, creating less drag and turbulence. But it’s also important to remember that deeper section aero wheels only scientifically make a difference when you’re reaching speeds of 30km/hour and higher. Once you’re reaching gradients over 5 – 7%, if your rims are too deep, it could be to the detriment of your speed. You need to get the balance right.
Why not make your existing bike even faster? Investing in the right wheels for you and your riding style will help you go faster without buying a new bike.
